Clutter is better .

Albert Einstein once asked, “If a cluttered desk signs a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?”
New research reveals that people who tend to scatter things, let things pile up, mix up things - in general disorganised, are more creative and more effective than people who are highly organised.
The most convincing argument is that messiness saves time for people who are messy. The study found that people who keep a neat, organised desk spend 36 percent more time looking for things, than people who keep a messy desk. What about the time people ‘waste’ to keep their desks neat?
The study claims that a messy home is more nurturing to children since children by their nature love a mess.
Freedman, the author of the study states that he has nothing against neat people. But he wonders, “What do they really get out of keeping everything neat and organized?” |

Veggie for higher IQ .

Vegetarianism is long associated with better health. There is a lot of scientific research linking vegetarianism to lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol level and lower risk of heart diseases.
Vegetarianism is also associated with prevention of cruelty to animals.
For the first time, research suggests that vegetarianism might help achieve higher IQ levels. Dr. Catherine Gale, an epidemiologist at the
University of
Southampton who studied more than 8000 people aged 30, whose IQ’s have been measured when they were 10, found that the higher the IQ, the greater were the chances of being a vegetarian.
A number of studies earlier had established the link between a higher IQ and a healthier diet since vegetarianism is accepted as a healthier diet, we must also accept the conclusion that vegetarianism could boost IQ levels.

Housework cuts breast cancer.

Dr. Petra Lahmann of Medical Research Council who analysed 218169 women aged from 20 to 80 found that women who keep their homes clean and tidy are less likely to develop breast cancer than those who let the dust and dishes pile up.
Housework provides greater protection from breast cancer than more strenuous exercises. Being active at home cut the chances of developing breast cancer by 29 percent compared with being inactive.
The researchers compared activity at home, work and leisure. They found that activity associated with housework had more significantly reduced the risk of developing breast cancer whereas activity associated with work and leisure had less effect.
Breast cancer tops the list of cancers in women, killing 12400 women every year in
UK alone.

Start your family early.

The current career norm needs rethinking. We are either focusing on our career when our children need us most, or we are not having children when our body is most fertile to conceive.
It is an established scientific fact that children conceived between the age of 20 to 30 are healthier and more intelligent when compared to children conceived earlier or later. It is also an accepted fact that children need the parents most during their infancy period of the first 2 years.
Today’s lifestyle ignores these two fundamental needs of a healthier future generation. Why not think of changing the rules?
Given the additional fact that the average lifespan has increased from 70 a decade ago, to 75, we can focus on our career from the age of 30 to 60 instead of 25 to 55. This also goes well in utilizing the knowledge and experience we gain in later years.
One more benefit of starting our family earlier than starting our career is that, we don’t have to face the insecurity of supporting our children when we become old. |

The Happiest Nation on Earth.

Vanuatu, the tiny
Pacific
Island is the happiest nation according to
UK based New Economic Foundation. The index is based on three indicators- Life satisfaction, Life expectancy and Ecological footprint. It reflects the average number of years of happy life produced, per unit of planetary resources combined.
The study surveyed 178 nations. G8 nations(Group of 8 rich nations) is nowhere in the top 50. The
UK is 108 and the
US is 150 in this list.
In
Asia,
Vietnam is the happiest country, ranking at 12 and
Singapore is the unhappiest country ranking at 131. Srilanka ranks 15,
Philippines ranks 17 and
Thailand ranks 32 in the list.

Smoking lowers IQ.

The cognitive deficiency in smokers is more severe than the cognitive deficiency found in alcoholics. One reason could be the fact that 87 percent of the alcoholics are smokers as well.
Dr. Jennifer Glass of the University of the
Michigan’s Addiction Research centre, who conducted the study, says that it is a myth that smoking improves mental functioning. Nicotine might temporarily raise alertness, but it severely affects mental functioning in the long run.
Dr. Glass tested alcoholics as well as smokers on global proficiency. The global proficiency test measures the speed and accuracy in short term memory, verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning. She found their scores lower. They were also weaker in verbal and visual-spatial reasoning.
Dr. Glass and her team mates found that smoking resulted in lower global proficiency scores than alcoholism.
Smokers beware! You are not only damaging your body, you are damaging your brain as well.

Sleep enough to stay slim.

It is a well known fact that when one doesn’t have adequate sleep, his energy levels are lowered and performance, both physical and mental diminished.
In a new study Dr. Shahrad Taheri of
University of
Bristol found relationship between lack of adequate sleep and obesity.
Dr. Shahrad found that the hormone ghrelin which is released by the stomach to signal hunger was 15 percent higher in people sleeping for only 5 hours a night, compared to the recommended 8 hours a night.
Inadequate sleep disturbs other hormones as well, such as insulin and cortisol. Adverse changes in insulin production can trigger diabetes and adverse changes in cortisol, the stress hormone, triggers cardiovascular diseases. The stress hormone cortisol could also boost the desire for fatty foods, leading to obesity.
Dr. Shahrad blames the TVs, mobile phones, computers and music players as major causes for inadequate sleep. Health or entertainment? The choice is ours.
