Are you a nice person? Then forget your career growth.
Nice people don’t put their career first. “They compromise their own interest to make others happy,” says Dr. Nikos Bozionelos of the University of Sheffield who conducted a study on personality and career success.
The study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organisational Psychology found that employees who are altruistic are less likely to be promoted and employers who are altruistic are less likely to succeed.
Here are 7 suggestions that’ll ensure that your altruism does not affect your career progress.
Do your work, not others’.
Help colleagues only when they deserve it.
Finish your work before helping others.
Ensure that colleagues don’t take advantage of you.
Remember you can’t please everybody every time.
Remember your growth is important than pleasing colleagues.
The report that women are potentially causing thousands of road accidents because of wearing high heels while driving has been dismissed by majority of the women as male chauvinism.
The research conducted by Sheilas’ Wheels, a car insurance company for women found that 80% of women wear inappropriate footwear while driving. 47% of the women admitted that they chose their footwear to match their dress rather than safety. 17% said that they keep a spare pair of flat shoes in the car and wear it while driving. 23% of the women admitted that they won’t bother to change their shoes, even though they were aware that high heels are not safe for driving.
One woman commented “Just like a child won’t give up a toy, just like a dog won’t give up a bone, I won’t give up my heels.”
Every woman knows that wearing heels is the major cause of ankle pain, heel pain, knee pain and back pain as it puts severe pressure on the spinal column. But looking fashionable is more important to them than living without pain. Physicians who prescribe them pain killers and recommend replacement surgery are viewed as feminists. Physicians who proscribe high heels are viewed as male chauvinists.
Millions of people are sacrificing their health for the sake of convenience of microwave ovens. They believe that microwave ovens do not harm them or the food.
A microwave oven contains a tube called magnetron, which produces micro wavelength radiation of 2.45 giga hertz. Microwave radiation changes the molecular structure of the food by the process of radiation.
How many people will continue using microwave ovens if they are called ‘Radiation ovens’ ? It’s similar to calling cow meat as ‘beef’, goat meat as ‘mutton’ and pig meat as ‘pork’. If the meat of these animals is marketed as cow, goat and pig, how many will continue to eat meat?
A lot of studies have warned about the dangers of radiation ovens. As early as in 1989, University of Minnesota warned, “Microwave ovens are not recommended for heating a baby’s feeding bottle. The bottle may be cool to touch, but the milk inside will be boiling hot. Steam may build up and could lead to the bottle exploding. It can cause changes in the milk.”
Dr. Lita Lee reported in Lancet, “Microwaving food converts certain trans amino acids into neurotoxins (poisonous to the nervous system) and nephrotoxins (poisonous to the kidneys)
Microwave ovens must be avoided for its cancer-causing effects and its nutritive-destruction effects.
“The common belief that working long hours is the death knell for marriages is wrong, ” says Prof. Mark Wooden, director of HILDA ( Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia ). The study was conducted over 5 years involving 14000 people and is considered as the most comprehensive survey.
The study found that the number of broken marriages increased when the number of working hours decreased.
It’s already known that factors such as household income, length of marriage, age at marriage, level of relationship satisfaction etc. influence the success of marriages. The higher these factors, the stronger the marriage.
What’s the connection between less work and failed marriage? One reason is that working longer hours translates into higher household income and greater comforts for the couple leading to higher satisfaction. Working shorter hours means underemployment which causes stress ruining the relationship.
Too much time together can cause stress and affect the matrimonial relationship. The survey concluded that it is less work and not too much work that can cause your marriage to break.
A survey conducted by a popular television channel found that only those who have a high income are considered a ‘catch’ by women.
In the survey majority of the women said that they would prefer a man who earns more to a man who has good looks or a higher IQ or a better sense of humour.
The survey suggests that handsome men who spend a lot of time and money to improve their appearance and intelligent men who spend a lot of time in improving their knowledge and IQ will lose out to rich men who focus on money and wealth, when it comes to marrying the women of their dreams.
In societies, where traditionally the parents take the responsibility of finding the match for their daughters, the prime ‘catch’ has always been ‘well-settled boys’. Boys who hold secured jobs, boys who earn handsome salary or boys with a major share in the family property are preferred to boys who look good or boys who are very intelligent.
Traditionally men are considered suitable for enforcing discipline and punishing the offenders. Are women unfit to take up this role? It seems so according to Dr. Klaas Stephan, a senior research fellow at the UniversityCollege , London.
The study found that men’s brains don’t feel the pain of the offenders. Rather, they enjoy it. Whereas, women’s brains empathise with the offenders’ pain. How can a woman punish someone, if she feels his pain and empathises with him?
The study explains the fact that children raised by single mothers and children raised by dominant mothers lack discipline in life and are more likely to become victims of addictions or develop criminal behaviour.
The research revealed another interesting fact. Men expressed a strong desire for revenge than women. Men’s brains associated reward with revenge whereas there was no such correlation in women's brains.
Are men superior to women? No. Are women superior to men? No. It’s simply men are different from women.
Research has already established the medical benefits of Omega-3 fatty acid. It lowers cholesterol; it lowers blood pressure; it prevents heart diseases; it prevents breast cancer.
Now, new research conducted at HarvardMedicalSchool and children’s Hospital, Boston suggests that Omega-3 fatty acid can prevent blindness, as well.
Abnormal vessel growth, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration are the three primary causes of blindness. It starts with loss of blood vessels in the retina, the nerve tissue that sends visual signals to the brain; starving the retina of oxygen.
The researchers Dr. Lois Smith and Dr. Kip Connor found that the omega-3 fatty acid reduced the vessel loss by 40 to 50 percent.
Our diet is rich in Omega-6 fatty acid but deficient in Omega-3 fatty acid. The ideal Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio is 2:1, whereas our typical diet has a ratio of 10:1 or higher.
We have to reduce our consumption of sunflower oil, safflower oil, canola oil and corn oil which are primary sources of Omega-6 fatty acids. Including Flaxseed and Walnuts in our diet and taking supplements such as Flaxseed oil, Walnut oil, Cod liver oil and Krill oil (Krill is a shrimp-like marine invertebrate animal) ensures adequate supply of Omega-3 to the body.
