Low-fat milk could cause infertility in females
A study conducted by the Harvard
School of Public Health found that women who drink whole
milk and eat full fat dairy products are more fertile
than women who stick to low fat dairy products. The
research found that low-fat dairy products increased the
risk of infertility by as much as 85 percent.
The study involved more than 18000 women aged 24
to 42, over a period of 8 years and was part of a larger
study called the Nurses Health Study involving 116,000
women.
“Women should consider changing to full-fat dairy
foods from low-fat dairy foods. For instance swapping
skimmed milk for whole milk and ice cream for low-fat
yogurt,” said Jorge Chavarro, the lead
researcher.
“Even one glass of whole milk made a significant
difference. The changes should be made, as far as
possible, without increasing the total amount of
saturated fat or calories in the diet by making small
adjustments elsewhere,” Chavarro
added.
Dietary fat has an impact on hormone levels. Full
fat dairy products have higher concentrations of
oestrogen (female hormone) which promotes ovulation,
whereas the protein that is added to low-fat milk has
been found to have androgenic (male hormone) effects
which suppresses ovulation.
“It’s a very comprehensive study. Considering the
large number of people involved in the study, you can
have some confidence in the results,” says Chris
Barratt, Faculty of Reproductive Medicine at the
University of
Birmingham.

Keep television, video games
and other electronics out of the
bedroom.
“Adequate sleep is just as important to
children’s health and well-being as diet and exercise.
It improves memory and facilitates learning, both vital
to improving academic performance,” says Dr. Daniel
Lewin, Children’s National Medical Centre, Washington.
National Sleep Foundation, a non-profit
Organisation dedicated to improving public health and
safety, by achieving greater understanding of sleep and
sleep disorders, recommends these sleep tips to help
parents and children.
·
Keep
television, video games and other electronics out of the
bedroom.
·
Create a
sleep environment that is cool, quiet, dimly lit and
comfortable.
·
Eliminate
exposure to electronic media (TV, Video and Computer
games) within an hour of bedtime.
·
Limit
caffeine, especially after lunch
time.
·
Keep a
regular sleep schedule and avoid extremes on
weekends.
·
Eat well
and exercise.
·
Reading before
going to bed is a good choice for kids as well as
adults.
Richard
Gelula, Director, National sleep Foundation suggests a
few more sleep-smart pointers to
parents.
- Be an
example. By practising good sleep habits, your kids
are less likely to develop bad ones.
- Talk to
your children about the importance of healthy sleep.
- Recognise
that children, including teens, need more sleep than
adults.
- Children
who have difficulty waking in the morning and children
who snore may not be getting adequate
sleep.
- Children
who do not sleep well are more likely to have
behavioural problems.
- Establish
a one-hour ‘electronic-free’ time before bedtime.
- Ask
teachers whether your child is alert or sleepy during
class and take steps to improve your child’s
sleep.

Eating junk food during
pregnancy may be the cause of obesity in
kids.

“Eating
large quantities of junk food when pregnant and when
breastfeeding could impair the normal control of
appetite and promote an exacerbated taste for junk food
in the offspring,” according to Dr. Stephanie Bayol,
lead author of a study published in the British Journal
of Nutrition.
Obesity is
a major cause of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
According to WHO, 400 million people are obese and 1.6
billion people are overweight. And there are 20 million
overweight children under the age of
5.
“Future mothers should be aware that pregnancy
and lactation are not the time to over-indulge on fatty
and sugary treats on the misguided assumption that they
are eating for two,” says Prof. Neil Stickland, a
co-author of the study.
“Healthy eating habits need to start during the
foetal and suckling life of an individual,” says Prof.
Stickland. Mothers need to be made aware of the risks
associated with eating junk food. They must be advised
to keep away from doughnuts, muffins, biscuits, crisps
and sweets during pregnancy and lactation.

Banned
additives in kids food, found in kids
medicine.
The Food
magazine, which examined the medicines meant for kids
less that 3 years old, found artificial dyes, sweeteners
and preservatives in 40 out of 41 medicines examined.
The survey found eight benzoate preservatives, two
sulphite preservatives, six sweeteners and four azo dye
colourings in the medicines examined. These additives
can trigger allergic reactions such as diarrhea, stomach
upsets and rashes. It is disturbing because no additives
(colours, sweeteners and preservatives) are permitted in
food and drinks meant for kids less that three years
old.
Medicine manufacturers insist that their
medicines are safe as the quantity of additives in
medicines is very low and the medicines are taken only
for a short period of time. They argue that medicines
could not be stored without adding preservatives and
medicines require sweeteners to ensure
palatability.
It is high time the medicine manufacturers
replace the artificial colours and artificial sweeteners
with natural alternatives such as beta-carotene and
beetroot which is already the practice in the food
industry.

US leads the world – in
medical
mistakes.

“Internal Bleeding: The truth behind
America’s
terrifying epidemic of medical mistakes” written by Dr.
Robert Watcher and Dr. Kaveh Shojana has failed to
eradicate the epidemic of medical errors.
Nearly 100,000 people died every year in the
US,
according to the study that examined 37 million patient
records. “The equivalent of 390 jumbo jets full of
people are dying each year in the
US due to
likely preventable medical errors,” says Dr.Samantha
Collier, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Health
Grades Inc, which conducted the
study.
One of the ways to eradicate this epidemic is to
encourage the physicians to disclose their medical
errors. They must be made aware of heir responsibility
towards the patient, the profession and the society.
They must be provided with assistance and protection to
overcome malpractice litigation, fear of losing
reputation, fear of suspension of licence
etc.
“Medical profession can learn a lot from the
aviation industry. The extensive studies on the cause of
accidents has dramatically improved air travel safety,”
says Liam Donaldson, Chairman of WHO’s World Health
Alliance for Patient Safety. Donaldson urged physicians
to listen to the following message of a mother whose
child died because of a medical error. “I don’t want
anybody to be scapegoated. I want you to honour my son’s
memory. The way I want you to do that is to learn from
him so this never happens to anyone else’s son.”

BMI (Body Mass Index) is
badly
flawed.
Body Mass Index, commonly known as BMI, invented
by Adolphe Quetelet, a Belgian is an index that
calculates body fat from height and weight. An index of
less than 18.5 is considered underweight; 18.5 to 25 is
considered normal; 25 to 30 is considered overweight and
above 30 is considered as obese. Medical
profession considers BMI as a standard diagnostic tool
to evaluate the risk of heart diseases.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic College of
Medicine, Minnesota who studied data covering more than
250,000 people found that people with a normal BMI had a
higher risk of death from heart diseases than people
with a low BMI. The researchers found another
interesting fact that people with a normal BMI had more
heart problems than people who had a overweight
BMI.
“BMI cannot be trusted as a reliable diagnostic
tool to evaluate the risk of heart diseases. People who carry
excess body fat, but tall, can have a normal BMI.
Similarly people who have a high BMI may carry muscle
mass and not body fat. We need alternative methods to
determine excess body fat,” according to Francisco
Lopez, the lead researcher.
Among he four tests, BMI, waist-to-hip ratio,
waist measure and hip measure, waist- to-hip ratio is
the best predictor of heart attack risk. It is better to
have a tape measure than a bathroom scales in the home,
to guide us in leading a healthy life.

Modern medicine uses
traditional Leech Therapy

Leech
Therapy dates back to the time of Hippocrates. Today
Ayurveda, Unani and Chinese Medicine use leech therapy
as a mode of treatment. The leech sucks away the
infected blood from the infected areas of the patient’s
body. The leech saliva contains certain enzymes which
dilutes the blood clots and improves blood circulation
in the infected areas. The leech saliva contains certain
bioactive substances such as Hirudin and Elgins which
inhibits blood coagulation and inflammation. It also
contains certain anesthetics and histamines which
reduces the pain and increases the blood flow to the
affected parts of the body.
Modern medicine uses leeches in micro surgery. In
reconstructive surgery of severed body parts such as
fingers, toes, ears or nose, the surgeon doesn’t have
any difficulty in attaching the arteries as arteries are
thick-walled and easy to suture. But the veins are
thin-walled and difficult to suture. Hence the venous
circulation of blood is restricted and the blood becomes
stagnant. If the stagnant blood is not removed, the
reattached part turns blue and becomes lifeless ad
useless. It is here the surgeon uses leeches to suck out
the stagnant blood.
Modern medicine uses leeches in skin grafts also,
where a flap of skin is used from an adjacent area of
the body to treat a defect or a burn injury. Dr. Ken
Dunn, Surgeon at the South Manchester Burns and plastic
surgery service says that leeches are extremely
effective and better than simply putting a hole in the
tissue because of a longer lasting anticoagulant
contained in the leech saliva.
In
2004, the FDA (United States Food and Drug
Administration) has approved the application for leeches
to be used in modern medicine as medical
devices. | |
