There’s nothing fresh
about air fresheners

People spend a lot of money on air fresheners and
household cleaners thinking that they are keeping their
homes germ-free, unaware of the fact that they and their
family members are inhaling toxins.
Air
fresheners and household cleaning sprays could be the
cause of high rates of asthma across Europe.
The
European Community Respiratory Health Survey conducted
across 10 European countries found that use of sprays on a
regular basis increased the risk of developing the disease
by between 30 to 50 percent. Even occasional use as little
as once a week increased the risk. The study found that
air fresheners, furniture sprays and glass cleaners had
the strongest effect.
Previous research at the University of California,
Berkeley found that many air fresheners and household
cleaners, especially those with pine, lemon or orange
scents emit excessive levels of toxic pollutants.
The 4-year study found that most of these products
contained ethylene-based glycol ethers, which are
classified as hazardous air pollutants by the U.S
Environmental Protection Agency. Most of the household
cleaners contained trephines which give these cleaning
products the ‘clean’ smell. Trephines react with ozone and
form toxic substances.
“My
suggestion is don’t stop cleaning, but clean with
consciousness that cleaning products themselves contain
materials that shouldn’t be inhaled,” said William
Nazaroff, the study author and professor of environmental
engineering at University of California, Berkeley.
To clean cautiously, Nazaroff suggests:
-
Keeping rooms adequately ventilated during and after
cleaning.
-
Using
products in diluted, rather than full-strength form.
-
Removing cleaning supplies from occupied rooms after
cleaning.
-
Avoid
ozone generators and ionizers if terpine-containing
products are used.
The
best way to get rid of offending smells is to clean the
room and objects and not mask the smell with chemical
fragrance. Opening the windows that allow fresh air to
circulate and sprinkling baking soda in dustbins will
eliminate the bad odour. Simmering lemon peel or cinnamon
on the stove is the natural way to maintain a pleasant
fragrance, without any health hazards.

Be
choosy when
eating
fish
Fish
is promoted for its health benefits, as it contains
Omega-3, a fatty acid that improves heart health and
prevents heart disease. But not all fish are healthy.
Fish
that swim on the bottom of the ocean contain more mercury
and must be preferably avoided. Fish that swim near the
ocean shore where desalination plants are located must
also preferably be avoided as it contain high
concentrations of mercury due to the effluents of
desalination plants.
According to US Department of Health and US Environmental
Agency some of the species that contain the highest level
of mercury are King Mackerel (Kingfish), Shark, Swordfish
and Tilefish. Some species that contain lowest level of
mercury are Anchovies, Sardine, Tuna (canned, light),
Herring, Mullet, Tilapia, Salmon and in the shell fish
species, clam, crab, lobster, oyster, scallop, shrimp, and
squid.
The
US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has offered the
following advice for women who are pregnant, women who
might become pregnant, nursing mothers and young children.
1.
Do not
eat Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel or Tilefish because
they contain high levels of mercury.
2.
Eat up
to 12 ounces (340 grams) a week of a variety of fish and
shellfish that are lower in mercury levels.
3.
Check
local advisories about the safety of fish caught in lakes,
rivers and coastal areas. If no advice is available eat up
to 6 ounces (170 grams) per week. |

Multivitamins can cause more harm than good

Many
people believe that taking multivitamins will present
chronic diseases. But studies show that multivitamins may
not provide the health benefits people expect from it and
in some cases the opposite has been found.
Dr.
Tim Byers of the University of Colorado School of Medicine
suggests people want to easily take a pill instead of
eating a healthy diet and this is why they believe that
vitamin supplements are relatively harmless.
It
is shocking to know that multivitamin supplements can
actually cause more harm than good. (A recent study at the
University of Washington reported that taking vitamin C,
vitamin E and folate supplements did not reduce the risk
of lung cancer) Another study but taking beta carotene
supplements by smokers actually increased the incidence of
lung cancer.
Researchers at Copenhagen University Hospital found in
trails involving 180,938 people that antioxidant
supplements increased mortality by 5 percent.
Dr. Christopher G. Slatore of the
University of Washington states, “Our study of
supplemental multivitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E and
folate did not show any evidence for a decreased risk of
lung cancer.”
World Cancer Research Fund says that there is not enough
evidence to support the claim that multivitamins can lower
the risk of contracting cancer. Prof. Martin Wiseman,
medical and scientific adviser to WCRF has advised people
to eat a healthy diet of fresh fruit and vegetables,
rather than rely on supplements.
There is no doubt that vitamins and minerals are essential
for optimum health. But the supply must come from dietary
sources and not through supplements. Because the body may
not be able to assimilate the vitamins and minerals from
the supplements or the dosage may be far in excess of what
the body needs.

The harmful effects of
skin whitening creams
Many
Asian and African women feel inferior about their skin
colour. They think a fair skin is more beautiful and are
willing to squander a fortune on whitening creams that
promise a fair complexion.
Most
of these skin- whitening creams contain hydroxyquinone-a
bleaching chemical, Clobetasol–a strong steroid and
mercury.
How does hydroxyquinone lighten the skin colour? It
strips the melanin, the skin’s natural pigmentation and
inhibits its production. But melanin is the skin’s natural
protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. When melanin’s
production is suppressed, the natural protection to the
skin against the sun’s UV rays is no longer available. The
skin becomes susceptible to cancer. That is why the
skin-whitening creams come with instructions advising
people to use sun-protection creams along with their
products.
Clobetasol can interfere with the secretion of hormones in
the body and can lead to infertility and obesity.
Mercury
can seep into blood stream through the skin and can cause
damage to the brain and to the kidneys. When it affects
the brain cells, it could cause depression and psychosis.
When it affects the kidney, it could cause kidney failure.

Reducing Kids’ salt intake reduces soft drink consumption
Children who eat less salt, drink fewer sugar-sweetened
soft drinks, according to researchers at the St. George’s
University of London, England.
Sugar-sweetened soft drinks are a significant source of
calorie intake in children. It has been shown that
sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption is related to
obesity in young people. Reducing sugar-sweetened soft
drinks may significantly lower the risk of obesity,
elevated blood pressure and later-in-life heart attack and
stroke, reports American Heart Association.
Dr.
Feng J.He, MD and her colleagues analyzed data from the
National Diet and Nutrition Survey in Great Britain. They
found that children eating a lower-salt diet drank fewer
sugar-sweetened soft drinks. From their research, they
predicted that reducing salt intake by 1 gram each day
would reduce sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption by 27
grams per day, after considering other factors such as
age, gender, bogy weight and level of physical activity.
If
children aged 4 to 18 years cut their salt intake intake
by half (3 grams per day), there would be a decrease of
approximately two sugar-sweetened soft drinks per week per
child, so each child would decrease calorie intake by
almost 250 kcal per week. Not only would reducing salt
intake lower blood pressure in children, but it could also
play a role in helping to reduce obesity,” Dr. He said.
Dr.
He recommends that parents check labels, choose low-salt
food products and not add salt during cooking and at the
table. She also urges consumers to challenge the food
industry to make a gradual and sustained reduction in the
amount of salt added to children’s food products. “Small
reduction in the salt content of 10 percent to 20 percent
cannot be detected by the human salt taste receptors,” Dr.
He said.

7 tips to prevent
osteoporosis
Here
are seven tips for women offered by Harvard Medical School
to strengthen the bones and preventing osteoporosis.
(Osteoporosis is a medical condition where the bones
become so brittle that even a mild fall could lead to
fracture)
1.
Get vital nutrients: Eat a healthy diet that provides potassium, magnesium,
phosphorus, calcium and vitamin D.
2.
Exercise:
Get at least 30 minutes of bone-strengthening exercises
such as brisk walking or resistance exercise.
3.
Don’t smoke:
Smokers lose bone faster and have higher fracture rates.
4.
Know your risk: Osteoporosis screening through BMD (Bone Mineral Density) testing is
recommended for older women and women who take medicine
that increase the risk factors.
5.
Consider bone preserving drugs: Post menopausal women who have had a fracture or received
a BMD score of 2.5 or worse should consider taking an
osteoporosis medication.
6.
Be aware of depression connection: Research has found that women with a history of
depression have lower bone density. They also have
higher levels of cortisol, a hormone related to bone
loss. So, if you are treated for depression, consider
having a BMD list.
7.
Maintain a healthy weight: Weighing less than 127 pounds or having a BMI less than
21 is a risk factor for osteoporosis. Also if you lose
weight during the menopausal transition, you are more
likely to lose bone. Avoid ultra low-calorie diets that
eliminate whole food groups. |

Job Stress raises heart
disease risk

People who have a stressful job ran a 70% higher chance of
developing heart disease, compared to people whose job is
not stressful, according to European Heart Journal.
The study involved more than 10,000
UK
civil servants, from messengers to top bosses. The study
started 40 years ago and is continuing till today. The
study monitored how stressful each employee rated his/her
job, heart rates, blood pressure readings, eating habits,
smoking habits, drinking habits and level of cortisol (a
stress hormone) in the blood.
The
team leader Dr. Tarani Chandola from the University
College, London, found a close link between CHD (Coronary
Heart Disease) and job stress. The link was more
pronounced among male employees than female employees.
Research had already shown an association between stress
and illness; but the reason for this association was not
clear. The researchers in this study say they understood
the biological mechanisms that have nothing to do with
lifestyle. No matter what the lifestyle is, if the job is
stressful, these biological mechanisms are persistently
there.
The researchers found that stress seems to have an impact
on a part of our nervous system that regulates how the
heart works, how well it beats and the pulse rate. They
also found that the neuroendocrine system which releases
hormones, is somewhat distrupted in people who are
stressed.
The risk of heart disease and heart attack was present
for stressed employees no matter what position they held. | |
