The positive effect of negative ions

Ions are charged particles in the air that are formed in nature by various means – sunlight, blowing winds, flowing water etc. When adequate energy acts upon a molecule, ejecting an electron out of it, that molecule becomes positively charged ion. The displaced electron attaches itself to a nearby molecule, becoming a negatively charged ion. It is a misnomer that molecules that have an extra electron are called negative ions, because they are the ones that are beneficial and have a positive effect on our health.

Negative ions produce biochemical reactions in our body, increasing the secretion of the ‘mood elevator’ serotonin, thereby helping us become energetic and optimistic. “Negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness and more mental energy,” says Pierce J.Howard,PhD.They also may protect us against germs in the air, by reducing irritation caused by inhaling various particles that makes us sneeze, cough or have a throat irritation, says Howard. This is due to the fact that airborne germs attach themselves to the positive ions, clump together, become heavy and fall on the ground, making the air cleaner.

Everyone would have experienced a kind of euphoria, energy and optimism while going for a walk in the mountains or standing near a waterfall. The secret behind this phenomenon is that the air, circulating the mountains and waterfalls, is rich with negative ions, containing 3000 to 4000 units per cubic centimetre (A cubic centimetre is roughly the size of a sugar cube). By contrast a highway with busy traffic may contain less than 100 negative ions per cubic centimetre. An air-conditioned room has zero negative ions as air-conditioning depletes the atmosphere of negative ions.
It is a known fact that people who live in mountains are healthier, happier and they live longer. The secret is the positive effect of the negative ions in the air that circulate the mountains. The fortunate few live in the mountains. The rest can, at the least, spend their holidays in mountains and recharge their body and mind.

Do you know that cows eat meat?

People are under the illusion that modern dairy cows are munching grass on rolling green pastures. They are surprised to learn that the cows are housed in factory sheds and fed ‘cattle feed’ that contains meat, drugs and plastics.

Here is a list of legally allowed ingredients in the cattle feed.
Tallow
: Tallow is a rendered form of beef  or mutton fat. (Rendering is an industrial process in which animal carcasses, parts and other wastes are ground up, heated and processed to produce  a variety of products such as meat meal, bone meal, blood meal, feather meal etc.)
Feather Meal
: It is rendered from the feathers of slaughtered poultry.
Fish Meal
: Fish meal is the leftover product of the fish oil industry, after the fish is ground, cooked and processed to remove their oil.
Meat and Bone Meal
: It is rendered from animal carcasses. After the mad cow disease outbreaks, it is now prohibited in US to use the meat of cows, goats and sheep. Hence meat and bone from pork is used.
Urea
: Urea is used in the cattle feed as a source of soluble protein.
Plastics
: Pellets made from plastic is fed to dairy cattle, to compensate for the lack of fibre in the feed.
Drugs
: As the dairy cows are raised in crowded, unhygienic sheds, antibiotics is added to the cattle feed as a disease-preventive measure. But unfortunately, it leads to the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that infects not only dairy cows but humans as well.

How can we protect ourselves from this misguided dairy industry?

  1. Buy dairy products from farms that raise grass-fed dairy cows.
  2. Buy dairy products from dairy farms that use only vegetarian animal feed.
  3. Buy from local, small farmers who raise just a few cows for their livelihood.
  4. Avoid or better give up consumption of dairy products.

Transfat – the worst food ever produced

Transfat, also known as hydrogenated fat is considered as the worst food ever produced, because of its double-damaging effect. It increases the bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, at the same time reducing the good cholesterol (HDL) levels in the blood. Increase in bad cholesterol levels narrows and hardens the arteries. By reducing the blood flow, it causes hypertension, chest pain and dizziness. If left unchecked, it might result in a heart attack or stroke. Transfat is also associated with obesity, infertility, diabetes and colon cancer.
Transfat is preferred by the food industry because it gives a buttery flavour to the food, increases the shelf-life of the food and costs a whole lot less than butter or beef tallow. It also satisfies people who do not eat meat products or dairy products, as it is made from vegetable oil.
Transfat is produced by adding hydrogen to vegetable oils such as soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil etc. it was once considered a healthy alternative because it is made from unsaturated fat.
Transfat is mainly found in hydrogenated cooking oil, used in homes and restaurants. It is also found in almost all junk foods – margarines, shortenings, doughnuts, crackers, snacks, sausages. Even some cereals, health bars and energy bars contain transfat. Take time to read the labels and shun foods that contain hydrogenated fat.
Switzerland and Denmark are the only two countries that have banned transfat completely. Beware of food made in the US. In the United States foods that contain less than 0.5 gm fat per serving can claim that it contains no transfat. So a cereal pack of six servings that contain 3 gm of transfat can be listed as containing no transfat, whereas studies have demonstrated that consuming just 2gm transfat a day, can increase the risk of heart diseases by more than 20 percent.
Developing the habit of reading and understanding the labels on the food packets can help us in avoiding unhealthy food and reducing the risk of heart diseases.

Dyeing hair could increase cancer risk

Those who use hair dyes more than nine times a year, have a 60 percent greater risk of lymphocytic leukaemia (white blood cell cancer), according to a new research by an international team of scientists. The research team was led by Dr. Yawei Zhang of Yale School of Public Health.

Those who use dark hair dyes are 50 percent more likely to develop follicular lymphoma, another type of blood cancer.  If non-permanent dark dyes are used, the risk increased to 70 percent.

“For some time now, links between hair dyes and cancer have been known. It is important that people are aware that many chemicals in consumer products have not been adequately tested for safety,” said Jamie Page, chief executive of Cancer Prevention &  Education Society.

The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) has the following precautions and suggestions for people who can’t live without dyeing their hair.

  • Delay dyeing hair until later in life.
  • Hair dyes are of four main types. Permanent, semi-permanent, temporary and progressive. Compounds suspected of causing cancer are found in permanent, semi-permanent and temporary dyes.
  • Consider using henna, which is largely plant-derived, or hair dyes that are lead acetate-based.
  • Don’t leave the hair dye on your head any longer than necessary.
  • Rinse your scalp thoroughly with water after use.
  • Never mix different hair dye products, because you can induce potentially harmful reactions.
  • Wear gloves when applying hair dye.
  • You can reduce the risk of cancer by exposing yourself to less hair dye.
  • Never dye your eyebrows or eyelashes.
  • Be sure to do a patch test for allergic reactions before applying the dye to your hair.

Spectacles is safer than contact lenses

Just as wearing high-heels is considered fashionable, wearing contact lenses is considered fashionable and is preferred to wearing spectacles. The centuries-old spectacles, is fast becoming obsolete. Just as high-heels carries high risks, contact lenses too could lead to several serious conditions.

Serious hazards of contact lenses
:

Corneal ulcer
Loss of vision
Conjunctivitis
Blurred vision

Other hazards of contact lenses:

Burning sensation
Itching sensation
Sensitivity to light
Pain
Swelling
Reddishness
Discomfort

People who are under a mistaken belief that appearance is more important than health, can reduce the risk of contracting eye infections, by following these guidelines.

  • Remove your contact lenses before going to sleep.
  • Remove your contact lenses before going for swimming.
  • Always use fresh contact lens solution.
  • Clean your lens cases every time lenses are removed.
  • Clean and disinfect your contact lenses.
  • Wash your hands before handling contact lenses.
  • Replace your contact lens case every three months.

Lower your cholesterol naturally

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in the cells. Cholesterol plays an important role in the production of cell membranes, nerve sheaths, hormones and certain other physiological functions. Cholesterol becomes a health hazard, only when it exceeds the required amount. There are two types of cholesterol – good cholesterol (HDL), which is beneficial to the body and bad cholesterol (LDL), which is harmful to the body.
The liver and other cells produce almost all the cholesterol needed by the body. Hence, consumption of transfat, saturated fat and dietary cholesterol leads to excess supply of cholesterol and clogs the arteries increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, heart attack and stroke.
Though cholesterol-reducing medicines such as Statins (limits cholesterol production in the liver), Inhibitors (inhibits cholesterol absorption in the intestines), Resins (promotes increased usage of cholesterol by the liver to produce bile) etc. are available, they are not without any side-effects.
The best way to maintain healthy cholesterol levels is to make changes in the lifestyle. Following the guidelines given below could help one in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and in reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

  • Stop consumption of transfat: Keep away from hydrogenated oil and all foods that use hydrogenated oil as an ingredient. Limit consumption of cholesterol-rich foods such as shellfish, offal, foie gras etc. and saturated-fatty diet such as red meat, poultry skin, dairy products etc.
  • Include mono-unsaturated fat in your diet: Studies have shown hat mono-unsaturated fat reduces bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and raises good cholesterol levels (HDL), Some of the best dietary sources of mono-unsaturated fat are olives/olive oil, sesame seeds/sesame oil, nuts especially almonds, avocado etc.
  • Incorporate Omega-3 fat in your diet: Research has proved that Omega-3 fatty acid raises good cholesterol levels. Fish varieties such as mackerel (small), tuna (small), sardines, anchovies etc, is a good source of omega-3. For vegetarians, walnuts, soybeans and flax seeds are good sources of Omega-3.
  • Include plant sterols: Sterols are substances found in cell membrane of plants and can block cholesterol absorption in the intestines by as much as 50%. Sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and wheat germ are good sources of plant sterol.
  • Eat soluble-fibre rich diet: Dietary soluble fibre helps in flushing out cholesterol from the intestines effectively blocking its absorption. Good sources of fibre are barley, oatmeal, apple, oranges, dates, figs, lady’s fingers etc.
  • Consume garlic: Many studies have established the potential of garlic in reducing bad cholesterol. You can include garlic in your cooking in the form of fresh garlic, garlic paste and garlic powder.
  • Lead an active lifestyle: Research has demonstrated that even moderate physical activity can help reduce your cholesterol levels.

 Mother’s diet influences baby’s gender

New research by Oxford University and University of Exeter establishes a clear link between the mother’s diet and the baby’s gender. The study found that women whose energy intake was higher at the time of conception, gave birth to male babies. The study also explains the falling rate of male babies in industrialized countries such as UK and US.
The study found that women with highest energy intake, women who consumed more calories, women who consumed a higher quantity and women who consumed a wider range of nutrients gave birth to male babies. There was a strong correlation between women eating breakfast cereals and giving birth to male babies.
Skipping breakfast is now common in industrialized countries such as UK, US and Canada and the proportion of adults eating breakfast has fallen from 86% to 75%. “This research may help to explain why in developed countries, where many young women choose to have low calorie diets the proportion of boys born is falling”, said  Dr. Fiona  Mathews, University of Exeter, who is the lead author of the study.

Although the gender of the embryo is determined by fathers, mothers appear able to favour the development of one gender rather than the other. It is known from IVF research, that high levels of glucose encourage the growth and development of male embryos. Skipping breakfast leads to lower levels of glucose encouraging the growth of female embryos.
This research provides evidence of a link between the mother’s diet around the time of consumption and the gender of the embryo. Still there is no evidence that diet during pregnancy plays any role in determining the gender of the embryo.
