Monthly
fasting reduces risk of heart
diseases
"People
who fast seem to receive a heart-protective benefit,”
says Dr. Benjamin D. Horne, Ph.D, Assistant Professor
and Director of Cardiovascular Centre at Utah
University.
Researchers examined the records of patients who had
undergone angiography, an x-ray examination of the blood
vessels of the heart to look for blockages. Those who
had a minimum of 70 percent blockages in at least one
artery were diagnosed as CAD (Coronary Artery Disease)
patents, whereas those who had less than 10 percent
blockage were diagnosed as free of CAD.
The researchers found that the majority of the people
who were free of CAD belonged to a religious group known
as Latter-Day Saints. Fasting on the first Sunday of
every month is one of the religious practises of this
group. “People who fast seem to receive a
heart-protective benefit, and this appeared to also hold
true in non-LDS people who fast as part of a
health-conscious lifestyle,” said Dr.Horne.
“When you abstain from food for 24 hours or so, it
reduces the constant exposure of the body to foods and
glucose. One of the major problems in the development of
the metabolic syndrome and the pathway to diabetes is
that, the insulin-producing beta cells become
desensitized. Routine fasting may allow them to
resensitize, to reset to a baseline level so they work
better,” said Dr. Horne. |

Is coffee a healthy beverage?
Latest research at Harvard, weighs the pros and cons of
coffee, the second most popular beverage. At 16 ounces
(480ml) or 2 cups a day, coffee is considered not only
safe but offers some health benefits as well.
Studies show that the risk for type 2 diabetes is lower
among regular coffee drinkers when compared to people
who don’t drink coffee. Coffee may reduce the risk of
developing gall stones, reduce the risk of liver damage,
reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease and may inhibit
the development of colon cancer. Coffee may improve
cognitive function and may also improve the endurance
performance in long-duration physical activities.
For those who need to stay alert, coffee helps
particularly after a period of sleep deprivation. For
this purpose, coffee consumption has to be spread over
the course of the day.
But, coffee is not completely safe. It may lead to a
modest increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Also
caffeine, coffee’s main ingredient is a mild addictive
stimulant.
The negative effects of coffee tend to emerge in
excessive drinking. Moderation is the key to enjoying
the health benefits of coffee.

Doctors use honey to heal wounds
Honey has been in use for healing wounds for thousands
of years. In the last two world wars, medics were using
poultices prepared with honey for treating the
battlefield wounds of soldiers. The discovery of
antibiotics replaced honey as the remedy for healing
wounds. Once again doctors are turning to honey as they
find germs are becoming more and more resistant to the
antibiotics currently available.
Doctors working at Bonn University Children’s Clinic
introduced honey in treating children’s wounds and have
seen amazing results. “Wounds heal more rapidly. What is
more, changing dressings is less painful, since the
poultices are easier to remove without damaging the
newly formed skin layer,” says Kai Sofka, wound
specialist at the University Children’s Clinic. Honey
helps in reducing the unpleasant smell from the wounds
as well. Even wounds that refused to heal for years have
been brought under control within a few weeks, according
to Kai Sofka.
Honey has been found effective even against the
multi-resistant germs such as MRSA (Methicillin
Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus or commonly known as
staph), says Dr. Arne Simon who works in the cancer ward
of the Bonn University Children’s Clinic.
While producing honey, bees add an enzyme called
glucose-oxidase. This enzyme results in the constant
production of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide in the
honey. Hydrogen peroxide is a very effective antiseptic.
But the hydrogen peroxide available in the chemist’s
shop loses its potency over time. But in honey, it is
produced constantly and provides round the clock
antiseptic protection to the wounds.

Heart attack triggers

Though heart attacks and strokes appear to happen
suddenly, they don’t. They usually happen after
cholesterol-rich plaque has lodged in the arteries that
nourish the heart and the brain. Knowing what sets off
heart attacks and strokes can help avoid these triggers.
Here is a list of common heart attack triggers.
Strenuous
Activities: Climbing uphill, lifting heavy objects,
running etc. that requires heavy physical exertion. But
exertion is less likely to cause trouble in people who
exercise regularly.
Lack of sleep: Inadequate sleep can affect the repair
and regeneration of the cells, reduce the immunity and
render the heart more vulnerable.
Grief: Losing people or things to which one is
excessively attached, produces grief, which can be a
potential trigger.
Anger: A bout of anger can increase the chances of
having a heart attack up to 14 times, during the next
two hours.
Overeating: Eating too much affects breathing, leads to
breathlessness and could trigger a heart attack.
Excessive
sexual activity: Sudden excitement, excessive sexual
activity or sexual activity inappropriate to one’s age
and health, stresses the heart a lot.
Extreme weather: Severe hot weather or severe cold
weather puts tremendous stress on the heart and could
trigger a heart attack.

Pomegranates prevents prostate cancer

Researchers at the University of California in Los
Angeles found that drinking a glass of pomegranate juice
daily, can significantly slow down the growth of
prostate cancer.
The research team focussed on patents who had earlier
undergone radiation treatment or surgery for prostate
cancer, but showed signs of recurrence. Prostate cancer is
diagnosed and monitored by the presence of a chemical
called PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) produced by the
prostate cancer cells. Researchers found that PSA levels
usually doubled in 15 months, but it took 54 months in
patents, who drank pomegranate juice daily. (The less time
it takes to double the PSA levels, the faster is the
cancer growth).
Pomegranate juice is known to have high levels of
antioxidants, which protects the body from the damage
caused by free radicals. It also contains isoflavones
which is believed to destroy cancer cells. “We are hoping
we may be able to prevent or delay the need for other
therapies such as hormone treatment or chemotherapy, both
of which bring with them harmful side effects,” said Dr.
Allan Pantuck, the lead researcher and study author.
An earlier study by Prof. Michael Aviram had shown
that drinking a glass of pomegranate juice daily can
reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Pomegranate
juice contains almost three times the total antioxidant
ability compared to the same quantity of green tea or red
wine.

Cesarean operation may harm babies' lungs
Danish researchers at the University of Aarhus
found that babies born by elective caesarean section
were up to four times more likely to have respiratory
problems than those born naturally. The babies may miss
out on hormonal and physiological changes during labour
which help mature the lungs, according to hem.
The Danish team examined data of over 34000 deliveries
and found the risk was higher, the earlier the caesarean
was performed. A doubling of risk was found at 39 weeks
gestation, a three-fold increase at 38 weeks gestation
and the risk was four- fold at 39 weeks gestation.
Dr. Maggie Blott, an obstetrician at King’s College
Hospital, London said that part of the problem might be
that during a caesarean, it was possible that lung fluid
is not drained away as well as it should be.
An earlier study at Oxford University found that women
could be four times likely to die in childbirth if they
opted for a caesarean instead of natural delivery.
Caesarean is a major operation which has health
implications for the baby as well as the mother. The
decision to opt for a caesarean section must be based on
sound medical opinion.

Breastfeeding does not lead to breast sagging

Thought almost all women are aware of the health
benefits of breastfeeding, they are reluctant to
breastfeed their babies because of the fear that their
breasts might sag later. A new study by University of
Kentucky plastic surgeon Dr. Brian Rinker found that
breastfeeding does not affect the shape of the breasts.
Rinker
and his colleagues studied women who opted for a breast
lift at the UK Healthcare Cosmetic Surgery Associates,
between the years 1998 to 2006. The women were on an
average 39 years old, 93 percent had at least one
pregnancy and most of them had breastfed at least one
child. Additionally the research team evaluated the
women’s medical history, body mass index, pre-pregnancy
bra cup size and smoking habits.
The results showed no difference in the degree of breast
ptosis (the medical term for sagging of the breasts) for
those women who breastfed and those who didn’t. However,
the researchers found that several other factors did
affect breast sagging, such as age, number of
pregnancies and smoking habits.
It’s
common knowledge that age and multiple pregnancies
results in the loosening of the skin and might
contribute to sagging. What about smoking? “Smoking has
an adverse effect on the shape of the breasts, as it
breaks down a protein on the skin called elastin, which
supports the breasts, explained Rinker.
